Scalloping is as good as it gets in Homosassa

homosassa-fishing-reportScalloping is about as good as it gets in Homosassa. I have found two different crops of scallops and here is how they break down.
For the mother lode head south of marker #4 in the Homosassa channel. The scallops are just silly thick here and it takes no time to get a boats limit. The only thing is they are on the small side. North towards Crystal River just off of Rock Island channel and south of the Scallop Rack there are a good amount of scallops. Not as much as in the Homosassa side but the benefit of these scallops is that they are big. The shell is greater in size and so is the muscle. I have yet to achieve a boat limit in this area but either side of the St. Martins Keys is good, you just have to pick your poison.

Redfishing continues to be the best bet to put a bend in the rod. At first light in the morning there have been a few reports of trout around the Little Homosassa river, Sugar Bowl and near the Spoil Banks in Crystal River. The redfish action starts around the first part of the incoming tide and if you start fishing from the outside keys and follow the tide as it moves into the backcountry you can stay with the bite. The outside redfish prefer live shrimp and as the tide fills into the coffee colored backcountry switch to Eppinger Rex spoons, D.O.A. CAL shads and MirrOlure LIL' Johns in rootbeer on a 1/8 oz. jighead.

River fishing for tarpon should start to turn on in the next few weeks. Crystal River and the Homosassa River on a late evening incoming tide is the best time to fish for them. Traditional fishing for tarpon in the river is to use a mullet head on the bottom in places like Gustaf Bay or around the channel near Wash Island. The best plugs to work the rivers channels are MirrOlure's Catch 200, D.O.A. Bait Buster or B.F.L 5.5 and Bomber Long A's. Incoming tide this weekend will be late evening with a mid day low tide.
