Man Arrested for Homosassa Armed Robberies

Detectives at the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office say that they have arrested the man who robbed two Kangaroo Gas Stations at knife point last Friday.

mckenziecharles39 year old Charles David McKenzie who lists no permanent was address arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery in the case of the two Homosassa gas stations that were robbed overnight last Thursday into Friday.

Tuesday the Sheriff’s Office was given the break they needed when a patrol vehicle spotted a vehicle that matched the description of another Homosassa burglary.

 

A woman had reported her credit card being stolen and it was just used at the Circle K Store at Ozello Trail and 19. That deputy conducted a traffic stop of the car just south of Ozello Trail. As soon as the car stopped the passenger, jumped out and fled on foot.  The officer then requested the assistance of several other units who actively began searching for the passenger.  The officer remained on scene with the vehicle and driver, identified as David Scott, who was ordered out of the vehicle and placed in handcuffs.

 

Scott said that the person that they were looking for was Charles McKenzie and said that he had detailed information pertaining to the two store robberies. He revealed that on the 23rd he drove McKenzie to the Kangaroo Express located on Longfellow and us Highway 19 where he dropped him off after McKenzie advised the witness he needed to get some cash. The witness said that after they left the Longfellow convenience store that he then drove McKenzie to the other convenience store located on Cardinal and picked him up on a street adjacent to where the store is a short time later.

 

A short time later McKenzie had run across Highway 19 into the Crystal Chevrolet parking lot where a deputy was able to apprehend him without incident.  He was asked  if he wished to speak with deputies in regards to the situation he was involved in, to which he advised he needed a lawyer and did not wish to speak with me.

 

The defendant was placed under arrest, at this time and transported to the Citrus County detention facility for booking and processing. He was charged Burglary of an occupied residence, petty theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and resisting arrest. His bond for these charges was set at $6,250.

 

A records check of Mr. McKenzie revealed that he had two local warrants for violation of probation and had an absconding warrant from out of Kentucky. No bond was given per the warrants issued. He was then charged later on with 2 counts of armed robbery for the Kangaroo robberies.
