Discovery Launch as Seen from Homosassa

Shuttle Discovery Liftoff (NASA)

Shuttle Discovery Liftoff (NASA)

Space Shuttle Discovery launched into space last night for mission STS-119, with a crew of seven including Japan’s first long-term resident of the International Space Station (ISS).

Living in Citrus County we do get to see the shuttle launch but it is usually not that good. Last night, however, the view was excellent.

Discovery was visible by  the magnificant  light emanating from its three main engines. It appeared as a very bright, pulsating, fast-moving star, shining with a yellowish-orange glow.

Smoke trail from Discovery seen from Homosassa

Nasa must have used a different flight path than normal, as Discovery seemed much closer and bigger than normal. We also witnessed for the very first time the solid rocket boosters seperating from the shuttle.

I have seen it on tv before but never from my Homosassa neighborhood.  It was simply the best launch that I have seen from home ever. Unfortunatly I had not been home all day and did not know that it was launching. We were outside in the yard when all the neighbors came out into the road. So I was only able to get this one picture of it.

If anyone has any other pictures of the launch please post them here in the comments section, or you can send them to  news @ searchcitrus.com   I would love to post them here.

Citrus County Violent Crime

Citrus County Sound OFF, County News, Opinions No Comments

Is quiet Citrus County turning more violent? Is the crime rate going up? Is this all just a sign of the times?

Wednesday morning around 4:40 am an Inverness man reported being shot in the shoulder by an unknown assailant.  Then just before 5:00 am on the other side of Inverness, a man reportedly stumbles into an all night restaurant on Hwy 41.

He had been slashed in the neck and wrist with a knife or some kind of cutting instrument and was airlifted to Tampa Bay’s St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment. In the man’s own words, he told authorities he’d been the victim of a robbery on the Withlacoochee State Trail in the vicinity of the Mossy Oak mobile home park nearby.

I thought we were in Florida

County News, Events, General Info, Opinions, Weather - Storm Information No Comments

Wow, it’s cold out.

How did I teleport north? I thought Citrus County was in Florida. Last night in Homosassa the temperature was 32° at 8:45 pm. Right now at 6:30 am the temperature is 19°!

Originally I am from Michigan and I could very easily get used to this weather. However, if we are going to have to put up with it we might as well get snow. Hey now, you should call me those things, it’s not nice.

Seriously it has been really cold the last couple of weeks, but they say it is going to warm up by the weekend. We should see temps in the mid 70′s Saturday and Sunday. Which personally I think that kind of weather is perfect.

After having these sub freezing conditions it will be nice to get out of the house this weekend. Maybe visit a park or wander around the flea markets. Just to get out and enjoy yourselves while it lasts. I don’t think that we have seen the last of the cold weather yet.

Response from Ginny Brown-Waite

Citrus County Sound OFF, Opinions, Politcs No Comments

While Congress was contemplating the $700 billion Bailout package I wrote to our Congresswoman, Ginny Brown-Waite expressing my anger about the package. Today I have received a response from her in regards to my comments, and I wanted to share them with you. Please read her letter below and comment on them here when you are done. Remember she is running for re-election this year while you read it.

Dear Paul:

Thank you for contacting my office with your thoughts on Congress’ recent efforts to address the faltering credit markets.  As you may know, I voted and spoke out against the bailout package both times it came before the House of Representatives.  The first time around, a majority of my colleagues joined me to defeat the bill.  However, by adding pork, the Senate was able to persuade enough of my colleagues to switch their votes and pass the bailout.
